Google has confirmed a significant outage affecting many Chromecast users, leading to widespread frustration as they encounter issues casting content. This problem has persisted for over 36 hours, with users reporting difficulties, particularly with Chromecast (2nd Gen) and Chromecast Audio devices. In response to the situation, Google has acknowledged the problem and is actively working on a solution.
However, it specifically advises users against performing a factory reset on their devices, a common troubleshooting step that many may consider. Since late Sunday, Chromecast users have faced an “Untrusted device” error when attempting to cast, indicating potential firmware issues. Additionally, many have noticed that their devices appear offline in the Google Home app, complicating the situation further.
While some users have suggested a workaround—resetting their Chromecast and altering the date on their phones—Google has firmly discouraged this approach. If anyone has already factory reset their device, they will need to wait for new guidance from Google on how to restore functionality. Compounding the problem, Google’s warning came almost 20 hours after the initial outage began, leaving many users unaware of the situation and potentially exacerbating their difficulties.
A Reddit user has speculated that the outage may be tied to an expired Certificate Authority (CA) that affects authentication for older Chromecast models. This could mean a longer wait for an official fix, possibly extending up to a week. As it stands, the outage, now exceeding 1.5 days, has caused considerable disruption for users relying on their Chromecast devices.
Many are hopeful for a swift resolution from Google.
