Fingerprint Issues Arise for Certain Pixel Users Following Google’s March Update

Some Google Pixel users have reported rare issues with their fingerprint readers following the latest software update. Historically, fingerprint scanner problems have been a recurring theme for Pixel users over the years. This update also reportedly caused haptic feedback issues for devices like the Pixel 7 and Pixel 8. While it is common for software updates to impact some devices without affecting others, it is notably frustrating when the fix turns out to be straightforward.

Despite the occurrence of these minor glitches, more significant issues, such as the camera bar on the Pixel 9 Pro separating, tend to dominate discussions. In January, an inquiry among Android Police readers revealed mixed experiences with their Pixel devices. While some users had not faced any bugs, many expressed disappointment due to ongoing issues with both critical and minor software features. Last week, the March Android 15 Pixel Drop was released, and some users encountered an unusual fingerprint reader issue.

After upgrading their Google Pixel 9 or Pixel 9 Pro devices, some found their fingerprint scanners completely disabled. Users shared their experiences on Reddit, highlighting different resolutions; one user rebooted their device seven times before the issue resolved, while another managed to fix it by fully shutting down and then restarting their phone. While the reports of this issue are rare—with estimates suggesting that only 0.1% of Pixel 9 users who updated are affected—it underscores a persistent trend of fingerprint scanner problems. This is not the first instance, as previous versions like Android 14’s QPR2 Beta 2 also disrupted fingerprint functionality.

Google has sought to improve biometric authentication with Android 15, suggesting the odd issues may stem from recent changes. Regardless, the infrequency of the problem makes it difficult to diagnose simply.
