Google is introducing a beta feature that enables users to select a secondary language for speech input, facilitating conversations in multiple languages with its Gemini and Gemini Live applications. With support for over 45 languages, Gemini Live allows users to switch between two languages for speech interactions, enhancing the versatility of the virtual assistant. To utilize this feature, users can navigate to the Gemini app and follow a simple process. By tapping on the profile icon in the top right corner, they can access Settings, then Languages, and select their preferred secondary language labeled as “Second language (speech only).”
This update marks a significant step for Google Gemini, as it embraces multilingual capabilities in its quest to become a more adaptable smart assistant. The feature, which supports both Gemini and Gemini Live, allows users to engage in conversations and obtain responses in their chosen languages. Although the concept of supporting multiple languages was mentioned back in December, it is only now that users can access some of its functionalities. Additionally, Google has updated its support page to confirm that “Gemini Live is available in over 45 languages,” as noted by Android Authority.
The support details for adding a second language are currently reflected in the ‘iPhone & iPad’ section, but the updates are already appearing in Gemini version 1.0.686588308 and Google app beta version 16.9.39.sa.arm64 on Android, indicating a potential rollout to stable versions soon. Currently, users can only add one secondary language, which is the only limitation. Gemini defaults to the first spoken language, and if a user begins conversing in the secondary language exclusively, Gemini may not automatically recognize the change. However, if explicitly instructed to switch languages, it will comply.
The timeline for this feature to extend to stable versions is still uncertain.
