Perplexity’s AI Assistant Returns to Google on Certain Android Devices

Perplexity AI is currently reviewing user complaints regarding Android devices that are automatically reverting their default assistant settings back to Google Assistant or Gemini. This situation raises concerns about possible bugs or interference within the platform. Aravind Srinivas, CEO of Perplexity, recently shared a post on X (formerly Twitter), which prompted many users to recount their experiences with these unexpected switches, while others reported no issues at all, leaving the scale of the problem unclear. The exact cause behind these reported assistant resets has yet to be identified, which calls for further investigation and more user feedback.

Based in San Francisco, Perplexity AI has made significant strides since its establishment in 2022, positioning itself as a competitor to Gemini and ChatGPT in the realm of AI chatbots and assistants, as well as Google Search in the search engine sector. Perplexity allows users to run its default model, Sonar, while also permitting the use of models like GPT-4.5, GPT-4o, and Claude 3.7 Sonnet. Recently, the company has ventured into the Android voice assistant market, introducing support for power-button gestures. The AI assistant boasts various features, including contextual awareness of on-screen content, live view support for camera detection, music playback on default services, and assistance with summarization and writing tasks.

With over 10 million downloads on Android, many users have transitioned to the Perplexity Assistant. Nevertheless, recent reports highlight that some devices are reverting to Google Assistant or Gemini. It is essential to note that this issue is likely not a result of malicious intent from Google, but rather a bug within Android or Perplexity itself. Users have expressed understandable frustration, and while the issue is not universal, it has gained attention.

Reports of these automatic switches date back to early in the year, and potential resolutions are now being explored.
