Google has recently made a significant change by allowing users to access its Gemini AI chatbot on the web without needing to log into a Google account. This marks a departure from the previous requirement that mandated account login, a policy that has been in place since the Bard days. Despite this new flexibility, users should be aware of certain limitations that come with not signing in. When using Gemini without logging in, users are restricted to the Gemini 2.0 Flash model, which is designed for everyday help.
Advanced features, including the other models like Deep Research and Personalization, are not available unless you have a Google account. Additionally, functionalities such as file uploads and the ability to access chat histories are also locked behind the account requirement. Consequently, if you close the Gemini tab while not logged in, you will lose your current conversation and have to start anew upon your next visit. For those seeking a more private experience, it is possible to engage with Gemini in incognito mode, which does not link the conversation to your Google account.
This feature is especially relevant in light of recent studies suggesting that Google Gemini collects more personal data than its competitors. Although this change facilitates access for new users without the need for an account, it is worth noting that on mobile devices—both Android and iPhone—the requirement to log in remains intact. Given the deep integration of Gemini within the Android ecosystem, it seems unlikely that the option to bypass account login will be extended to the mobile app. While an incognito option can enhance privacy, concerns about data collection persist, making it a topic worth considering for users.
