Google Messages is introducing a “Delete for everyone” feature in its beta version, aligning itself with popular messaging apps such as WhatsApp and iMessage that already offer this capability. This feature, connected to RCS Universal Profile 2.7, enables users to delete sent RCS messages for all recipients within a specified 15-minute time frame. However, recipients using older app versions may still view the deleted messages.
This update marks a significant step for Google Messages, responding to a long-standing demand from users for more control over sent messages. Many individuals have experienced the regret of sending a text, whether it was accidental or rushed. Competing platforms like WhatsApp, Telegram, and iMessage have provided the option to unsend or delete messages, including in group chat scenarios.
In contrast, Google Messages has only allowed users to either edit their messages or delete them solely from their own chat window. The feature’s development picked up momentum in February when code indications hinted at the potential for a “Delete for everyone” function in Google Messages. Now, it appears that this long-awaited feature is in the process of rolling out in the beta version.
Initially, it needed to be manually enabled, but reports indicate that it is now appearing automatically for some users, as revealed by Android leaker @Assembledebug. Although I have explored several new Google Messages beta builds, the delete functionality isn’t available yet on my end. Once this feature is active, users will have a 15-minute window to delete their messages.
The deletion process will involve a straightforward method: long-press the message, tap the bin or delete icon at the top, and select “Delete for everyone.” It’s vital to note that the feature includes a disclaimer stating, “Messages may still be seen by others on older app versions,” emphasizing that its effectiveness hinges on all participants using the latest Google Messages version. The timeline for a wide rollout of this feature remains uncertain, but it is clear that deletion will be limited to RCS messages within the 15-minute constraint.
