Google is currently testing a new feature in the latest beta version of Gboard for Android that lets users hide the comma and period keys. This design choice draws inspiration from the iOS keyboard, which does not display major punctuation on the primary QWERTY layout. Users have to switch to the ‘123’ menu to access these punctuation marks, a process that can be inconvenient, especially for those transitioning from Android to iOS.
However, many find it easy to adapt over time. The potential change to Gboard aims to offer a cleaner keyboard interface, which could appeal to users who prefer a minimalist look or those coming from iOS. Unlike Apple’s fixed design, Gboard is expected to provide an option to toggle the visibility of the comma and period keys, allowing users to maintain their preferred typing experience.
Recent hints from version 15.2.03.736047990-beta-arm64-v8a suggest that a dedicated settings toggle titled “show comma and period keys” may be implemented. It remains uncertain whether this new setting will be enabled by default when the feature is released. A default setting that could confuse users should be avoided to minimize frustrations.
Those who want a more spacious keyboard can opt to hide the punctuation, while users who prefer the traditional layout can keep it unchanged. While there are concerns about Gboard following Apple’s lead too closely, it seems highly unlikely that this new layout will become the only option available. If it does, Android users may need to explore alternative keyboard solutions.
In the meantime, they can await further updates on this feature in the Gboard beta.
