Social media platforms Reddit and X (formerly known as Twitter) experienced significant outages affecting numerous users. The issues began shortly before 3:00 p.m. ET, as many users reported difficulties accessing the sites. Reddit users encountered a “Server error.
Try again later” message, while posts on X struggled to load. Reports on Downdetector highlighted this disruption, with over 32,000 complaints from Reddit users and more than 18,000 from X users at around 3:05 p.m. It appears that the outages might be linked to issues with Amazon Web Services (AWS), which has a history of providing hosting services for both platforms. Downdetector reports indicated a concurrent spike in user issues related to AWS, suggesting that the web hosting platform could be the root cause of the interruptions.
In the past, both Reddit and Twitter have acknowledged ties to AWS, with Twitter reportedly having payment delays that affected its service in 2023. Fortunately, there seems to be progress towards resolving the issues. Reddit’s status-monitoring website confirmed at 3:16 p.m. ET that the engineering team was investigating the problem, and by 3:48 p.m., they announced a fix was implemented and monitoring was underway.
Concurrently, reports indicated that X services began to return to normal around 3:45 p.m.
By 5:00 p.m. ET, outage reports for both Reddit and X had decreased to near-normal levels, indicating that the issues were likely resolved. Testing conducted by various team members confirmed that access to both social media sites had stabilized in the half hour leading up to that time.
