YouTube’s new full screen player update is AMOLED-unfriendly but won’t be here for long.

The YouTube app has recently introduced an unexpected change, displaying distracting gray bars on full-screen videos. This alteration primarily affects videos viewed on AMOLED screens, which are known for their deep black levels. Fortunately, a solution is already in development, as the latest beta version of the YouTube app has restored the traditional black bars that users prefer.

In today’s mobile landscape, tall phone screens turned sideways serve effectively as landscape displays for videos. However, since videos come in various dimensions, apps need to make adjustments when the video does not perfectly fit the screen. While YouTube’s Ambient Mode attempts to address this with a colorful blur, many users feel that simple black bars are the best option.

Recently, reports surfaced indicating that instead of these black bars, gray ones were being displayed in the full-screen mode, causing frustration among users. Numerous users have taken to social media to express their discontent, noting that even with Ambient Mode turned off, the YouTube app is still showing gray bars on either side of the video. Although this alteration might not seem significant in screenshots, it can be quite distracting during actual use, especially on AMOLED displays where dark shades are less noticeable.

The good news is that the latest beta version of the YouTube app, version 20.13.32, has already addressed this issue by reverting to the familiar black bars. If you are facing this annoying gray bar issue, expect relief soon, as YouTube’s team has acknowledged the problem and confirmed that a fix is on its way. While it may present a minor inconvenience, the resolution appears to be just around the corner.
