Instagram has introduced a new feature that allows users to watch Reels at double speed by long-pressing the edges of their screens. This fast-forward option is applicable to all Reels, in contrast to the sometimes inconsistent progress bar. The feature is now being rolled out globally and has already been spotted in a stable version of the Android app.
Last year, Instagram surpassed TikTok to become the most downloaded app in the world, largely due to the introduction of Reels in 2020 as a competitor to the Chinese app. Despite improvements in short-form videos on Instagram, many users still feel it cannot compete with TikTok’s engaging bite-sized clips. As time progresses, it remains to be seen who will emerge victorious, but Meta is actively working to enhance Instagram Reels with new functionalities to align more closely with TikTok.
For instance, the platform adopted three-minute clips earlier this year to broaden its appeal. With Reels now extending up to 180 seconds, the option to speed up playback adds value to the viewing experience. To utilize this feature, users simply need to long-press the right or left side of their screens; releasing it will return the video to its standard playback speed.
Additionally, there’s the option to use a progress bar to skip through Reels, although this feature is not always available. Meta has ambitious plans for the future of Instagram, aiming to provide Reels with a unique identity distinct from its parent platform. Reports suggest that the company is considering launching a separate app called Reels, though specific timelines remain unconfirmed.
As Instagram continues to evolve, it seeks to solidify its presence in the competitive landscape of short-form video content.
