The Google Keep app for Android has introduced a new feature allowing users to create text notes with a single tap. This functionality has been under development for several months and is gradually being rolled out to select users. A single tap of the button will generate a text note, while a long press on the button in the bottom right corner reveals additional options. In November, the Google Keep team revamped its floating action button (FAB), adding more functionality but inadvertently making the process for creating a basic text note more complicated.
This was a concern since creating simple text notes is one of the most frequently used features in the app. Evidence of change emerged in early January with a “Create text notes with a single tap” option appearing in the settings. Now, this toggle is becoming available on some Android devices using the latest version of Google Keep. According to reports from 9to5Google, one of their devices running version 5.25.102.01.90 has the “Create text notes by default” toggle live.
Others may not see it yet, indicating it might be part of a server-side update. When this toggle is enabled, users can generate a text note more conveniently while currently, it requires an additional tap. The app has made minor adjustments to this toggle since its initial introduction. The new option now resides in a dedicated section called Note Creation, located between Display Options and Reminder Defaults.
This change hints at the possibility of more options being added in future updates. Additionally, the phrasing has been refined, indicating that a long press of the FAB will display the remaining note options, while a single tap opens a basic text note. Another update is the inclusion of the Audio option at the top of the FAB, which may make it feel more cluttered. Previously hidden in the ‘+’ menu, this change streamlines the process for users.
