Nothing has just introduced the Ear (3.5mm), a pair of wired earbuds with an astonishingly long 50-meter cable and a classic 3.5mm jack. However, given the company’s history of previous humorous announcements, such as Nothing Beer (5.1%) and the Nothing Phone 2a Micro, it is highly probable that the Ear (3.5mm) is simply an elaborate April Fools’ Day joke. Notably, none of Nothing’s smartphones, including the CMF Phone 1, has a 3.5mm headphone jack. In the tech industry, April 1st has become a day where surreal announcements abound, resembling a scene from the Purge movies—minus the chaos.
Companies take the opportunity to push the limits of creativity, making outlandish claims and product releases outside the typical confines of marketing restraint. Just yesterday, Nothing teased an image of a 3.5mm audio jack along with the phrase “get ready to tangle.” Today, it seems they have unveiled the Ear (3.5mm). The outrageous length of the 50-meter cable, roughly the span of an Olympic-sized swimming pool, adds to the absurdity.
Imagine attaching something resembling a garden hose to the Nothing Ear Open earbuds. While it’s unlikely that Nothing will mass-produce this, there’s a slim chance it could be offered as a highly limited-edition, tongue-in-cheek accessory. Alternatively, this announcement might simply serve as a playful homage to the bygone era of wired earbuds, framed as a comedic April Fools’ prank that boasts quality imagery and production. Ultimately, the Ear (3.5mm) prompts us to consider how far tech companies will go for a laugh.
