Real-time Camera Mode of Gemini Live Now Officially Released to a Broader Audience

Project Astra enhances Gemini Live by introducing real-time video capabilities, allowing users to interact with their AI assistant using a live camera feed. Google announced Project Astra at the I/O 2024 event, generating excitement about future advancements in AI-powered assistance. Following a brief silence, Google confirmed that Project Astra would be integrated into Gemini Live, with a rollout set for March 2025.

As per recent updates, Google has begun a wider distribution of Gemini Live with Astra functionality. Reports indicate that users on Android 10 and later are now receiving prompts to share their phone’s camera or screen while using Gemini Live. The overlay describes Project Astra as a tool for discussing ideas, exploring one’s environment, or seeking assistance with on-screen content.

Community feedback has been positive, with many users on platforms like Reddit confirming access to these new features. Personally, I noticed the camera and screen-sharing buttons on my Xiaomi 15 Ultra without an accompanying overlay, indicating that the rollout might still be in progress for some devices. Google’s communications suggest that users can engage with Gemini by sharing what they’re seeing in real-time, making it possible to seek help with tasks ranging from appliance repairs to studying.

It’s important to note that access to Gemini Live and Astra features requires a Gemini Advanced subscription. Currently, while Gemini 2.5 Pro is available to all users, Project Astra relies on the older Gemini 2.0 model. Initially, these capabilities seemed confined to specific devices like the Pixel range and Samsung Galaxy S25 series.

However, Google clarified that Gemini Live’s video and screen-sharing features would now work on all Android devices running version 10 or later, though still requiring a paid subscription to Google One AI Premium for access. If you have the correct plan but don’t see the features, make sure your Google app is updated and consider restarting it to activate Astra capabilities.
