The Google Pixel Watch 3 now includes a new feature that detects the loss of pulse in users. This innovative function automatically prompts emergency services when triggered.
The rollout is currently happening for Pixel Watch 3 users in the United States, following an initial launch in several European countries. With the advancement of technology, health and fitness monitoring has become more accessible through smartwatches.
Many devices now offer sophisticated tools for identifying significant health risks, such as sleep apnea and irregular heartbeats. The Google Pixel Watch is among those that have implemented these features, and the introduction of loss of pulse detection is particularly significant for users.
Although it may seem like a natural addition given that smartwatches continuously track heart rates, Google only began implementing this feature after securing FDA clearance in late February. Prior to the U.S. release, the loss of pulse detection debuted in select European markets in September of the previous year, and it is now accessible in 14 countries.
This feature operates similarly to fall detection or collision detection, making emergency calls as needed. Google claims this capability is the first of its kind, backed by an impressive 100,000 hours of testing to ensure both sensitivity and accuracy, while also minimizing false alarms.
The rollout is already taking place for Pixel Watch 3 customers through an OTA update. It’s important to note that the recent March 2025 update does not include this feature.
However, there’s a possibility that it will be activated on the server side soon. Users are not required to use this feature, as Google has made it opt-in only.
Other updates in March include fixes for delayed notifications and new scam detection options for users in the U.S.
