With the release of Chrome 135 on Android, the browser has introduced a new gesture bar that floats above content, enhancing the user experience by preventing any obstruction typically caused by a solid background. This update allows content to extend to the edge of the screen, right beneath the navigation bar, creating a more immersive viewing experience. Although you might have updated to Chrome 135, it is important to note that the edge-to-edge design is a server-side update and may take time to be fully rolled out.
Many users can expect to see this change implemented soon, possibly by the end of the week. Historically, Android apps could utilize fullscreen capabilities right underneath the status and navigation bars, but many developers opted for traditional layouts instead of embracing the newer design standards. However, with the launch of Android 15, Google is setting edge-to-edge designs as the standard, prompting Chrome to catch up now with its recent update.
According to reports from 9to5Google, this update features a more streamlined bottom interface for Chrome, allowing web content to scroll all the way down to the screen’s base. The gesture navigation bar now elegantly floats over the content, removing the need for a solid background behind it. Although this adjustment does not technically display more of the webpage, it aligns Chrome with the modern edge-to-edge aesthetic prevalent in Android applications today.
This change marks a significant update from the previous design, where the gesture navigation bar would sit on a solid, opaque background. Now, the content seamlessly flows behind it, offering a more fluid and contemporary look. Currently, the rollout of this edge-to-edge design is primarily reaching smaller phones, with tablet support expected later on.
Notably, this feature is compatible only with gesture navigation; users still utilizing the traditional three-button layout will not have access to this update.
