Google Keep, one of the popular apps in Google’s suite, is receiving an important update that enhances its widget. This update introduces a cleaner design that aligns with the Material You guidelines, making the widget more aesthetically pleasing and functional. This change focuses specifically on the Quick Capture widget of Google Keep, optimizing the use of homescreen space with new shape options.
The refreshed Android widget offers improved spatial utilization, including larger flower-style shapes and rounded buttons. These new shapes adapt based on the size you choose. If you select a 2×1 size or smaller, the widget appears as a single shortcut button.
When resized to 2×2, it transforms into a more expansive flower-style widget that effectively highlights different note types. Additionally, changes have been made to the 3×1 widget to enhance its layout, making it more user-friendly. The updated widget spans the entire width of the homescreen grid—this is a shift from the previous design, which only reached the edges.
The buttons now feature a rounded-square shape, creating a cohesive look with the overall design language of Android. In contrast, the old “new note” shortcut had a pill-shaped design, which feels less integrated. While the update focuses solely on the Quick Capture widget, no alterations have been made to the Note collection or single note widgets, which already stretched edge-to-edge.
The redesign keeps Google Keep in line with similar updates seen in other apps, such as Google Drive. This new widget is rolling out as part of a server-side update, meaning users may need to reinstall the widget on their homescreen for the new design to appear. The rollout is associated with Google Keep version 5.25.14x, which is currently available.
