The Audio Overview feature was introduced to Google Gemini last month, but currently, it is not functioning properly. Users attempting to generate Audio Overviews are met with an error message, a problem affecting both free and paid subscribers of the service. Alternatively, the Audio Overviews feature remains operational in NotebookLM, providing a viable option for those seeking to convert text into engaging audio content.
Audio Overviews in Google’s NotebookLM allow users to transform multiple paragraphs of text into an audio format reminiscent of a podcast, enriching the user experience. While this feature recently became available on Google Gemini’s web and mobile platforms, issues have arisen since the weekend. Reports indicate that neither the Gemini 2.0 Flash nor the 2.5 Pro (Experimental) versions are able to successfully generate audio overviews.
When working properly, users could upload texts and obtain an audio summary by selecting the *Generate Audio Overview* button. After initiating the process, Gemini would notify users that it might take a few minutes depending on the document’s length. Although the app would generally prompt notifications upon completion, users are currently only receiving error messages.
Attempts with various document types, including PDF and DOCX, resulted in the same frustrating outcome, although there were options to receive a text summary or answers to specific questions about the uploaded material. In contrast, NotebookLM is currently unaffected by these issues and maintains functionality for Audio Overviews. While this platform is limited to web access for the time being, changes are anticipated in the future.
Lastly, some Gemini Advanced subscribers experienced a brief display of the outdated Gemini 2.0 Experimental model, which was quickly corrected. The newest Gemini 2.5 Pro (Experimental) has recently gained support for Deep Research, though this enhancement is presently available only to Gemini Advanced customers.
