Gemini Live has introduced free screen-sharing and camera capabilities for all Android users. This allows users to easily share their screen or camera feed, and Gemini Live can analyze the content displayed or captured. The feature was first showcased during Google I/O 2024 as part of the Project Astra initiative.
Originally, the capabilities of Gemini Live were available only to some Gemini Advanced users and were restricted by a paywall. However, Google has announced the removal of this paywall, making these innovative features accessible to all Android users. To use Gemini Live for screen sharing, simply launch the application, and a notification will appear with an option to “Share screen with Live.”
Once you confirm, a small counter will be displayed in the status bar, and a phone-call notification will be visible. This setup allows users to browse apps or websites while conversing with Gemini, and the session can be ended anytime through the notification shade. When using the camera features, Gemini Live must be in fullscreen mode.
Users can tap on a camera icon next to the microphone to open a live viewfinder, offering options to switch between various lenses. For optimal results, it is advisable to keep movements steady and maintain an active display; otherwise, the app may deactivate. Alongside its existing capabilities to analyze images, PDFs, and YouTube videos, Gemini can now also analyze real-time content in front of users.
Whether identifying a plant or providing information about other subjects, Gemini’s functionality continues to expand. The rollout of these features may take a few weeks, so users should stay tuned for their availability on all Android devices by the end of the month.
