Google is now rolling out a significant update for the Pixel Watch, aimed at fixing the bugs that were present in the initial March build. This update reverts to the original step count algorithm after users experienced issues with the new algorithm introduced earlier.
For Pixel Watch owners who had been using the November 2024 build, this update brings the opportunity to try Wear OS 5.1. Google had initially launched Wear OS 5.1 for the Pixel Watch lineup in early March 2023 but had to retract it weeks later due to various bugs.
An additional bug-fixing release followed in early April but was only available to those who had installed the March update. Now, the latest update is being widely released.
Interestingly, users who had the initial April build will also receive the new April 2025 firmware. This update addresses reports of unusually high step counts by reverting to the previous step counting algorithm.
Although Google had stated that the new algorithm would provide enhanced accuracy, feedback indicated otherwise, prompting the reversion to the original method. The April 2025 firmware, which is based on Android 15 and includes Wear OS 5.1, aims to provide users with smoother system performance, though it does not introduce any significant visual changes.
Starting today, Google is enabling the April 2025 update for all Pixel Watch models, with the rollout occurring in phases over the next few weeks. To manually check for the update, users can go to Settings > System > System updates, and tap on the “Your watch is up to date” screen multiple times.
It’s recommended to have the watch charged during this process. The new firmware carries the build number BP1A.250305.019.W8 and includes the March security patch.
