Google’s new “Ask Photos” AI feature was introduced to enhance the search experience in Google Photos, promising an easier way to locate images without endless scrolling. Users can type their queries in natural language, allowing the AI to identify relevant images based on their content and additional context. However, many users have found that this feature has not met their expectations for everyday searches.
For Android users, there is a convenient workaround. By simply double-tapping the search icon, they can instantly revert to the classic search interface that many still prefer. Unfortunately, this feature isn’t available for iOS users.
On iOS, double-tapping the icon only leads back to the “Ask Photos” mode, making it less functional. Despite being marketed as an improvement, the “Ask Photos” setup has faced criticism. A February update aimed to address users’ concerns by refining the Gemini-powered search process, yet many still find themselves stuck with the default clunky setup.
Those who wish to return to the old search function must navigate to a hidden button labeled “Switch to classic search,” which can be frustrating. Even with its shortcomings, “Ask Photos” does offer some innovative capabilities. It allows users to pose specific queries, such as, “Where did we camp last time at Yosemite?” While classic search can also handle natural language questions, the AI component of “Ask Photos” introduces a unique and engaging way to explore a photo library.
Overall, while some users lean towards the traditional search, the new feature does provide creative avenues for photo discovery.
