Google is reportedly working on a new feature that will allow Pixel users to turn off their screens using a double-tap gesture. This feature, which brings Google closer in line with competitors such as Samsung and OnePlus, was discovered in Android 16 Beta 4. However, it is not yet functional, indicating that its release may be delayed until a future quarterly update. Currently, while Pixel devices allow users to wake the screen with a double tap, they do not support the opposite action of turning the screen off in the same manner.
Other smartphone manufacturers like Samsung and OnePlus have already integrated this feature, creating an expectation among users for a similar capability on Pixel devices. Mishaal Rahman, in a report for Android Authority, outlined that hidden components in the latest beta suggest the feature might soon be available. However, as of now, it is not active in Android 16 Beta 4. Rahman managed to experiment with the software and activate the feature, showing its potential.
It remains to be seen whether the double-tap gesture will be limited to the lock screen or will also operate from any empty space on the home screen, similar to what is currently available on Samsung devices. While the expectation is that this feature will not be ready for the initial stable release of Android 16 in June, users can utilize third-party apps to achieve a similar result in the meantime. There is speculation that Google may introduce this feature in an update later in the year, perhaps with the first quarterly platform update. Additionally, other features initially planned for Android 16, including changes to the lock screen and new Settings options, might also debut in subsequent updates, keeping users hopeful for enhancements beyond the initial release.
