Google has announced that it will unveil updates for Android a week prior to the highly anticipated Google I/O 2025 event. On May 13th, a special pre-recorded episode of “The Android Show” will stream, delivering exciting initial news about Android. Further announcements, which could include details on Android 16 and updates to Material You, are still expected during the Google I/O event itself. Google I/O serves as a platform for the company to inform developers about changes to its flagship software.
While the event has traditionally focused on Android app developers, recent editions have placed a stronger emphasis on AI products and opportunities for developers within that space. However, this year, Google seems to be shifting its approach. Instead of downplaying Android in favor of other technologies, the company will provide an in-depth look at its mobile operating system one week before the main event. Sameer Samat, President of the Android Ecosystem, noted that Android updates have always played a significant role in Google I/O.
He stated, “We’ll be sharing news now to get you ready for I/O,” indicating that even more special announcements and surprises will be unveiled during the I/O event itself. In addition to the dedicated episode of The Android Show, Google will also share additional Android updates during the keynotes at I/O. Developers can anticipate more in-depth information during the technical sessions that will follow. The I/O edition of The Android Show is set to go live at 1 p.m.
ET (10 a.m. PT) on May 13th, and viewers can prepare for what is expected to be an “Expressive” update to Material You, along with major developments concerning Gemini, Android XR, and web services.
