T-Mobile began the year on a high note, reporting a record-breaking first quarter with over a million new customers added. This achievement comes at a time when one of its major competitors faced significant losses. As T-Mobile aims to elevate its performance further with new initiatives, it recently announced a remarkable milestone in upload speeds achieved within a commercial setting. According to a release from T-Mobile, its 5G Advanced network has reached an impressive peak upload speed of 550 Mbps.
This accomplishment is significant given that upload speeds play a critical role in enhancing video streaming, online gaming, and various internet activities. What truly distinguishes this achievement is that it was accomplished outside a laboratory environment; the feat took place at a commercial site in Seattle. In explaining the technicalities, T-Mobile noted that the impressive speeds were made possible by utilizing a “sub-6 GHz spectrum,” specifically through 3GPP Release 17 UL Tx Switching. For those unfamiliar with the terminology, T-Mobile elaborated on the technology involved.
It utilizes smart multiplexing to optimize user throughput by leveraging UL Carrier Aggregation and UL MIMO for both TDD and FDD spectrums. The hardware enabling this advancement was supplied by MediaTek and features an M90 modem. However, it’s essential to temper expectations regarding when these speeds will be available in residential areas. Users aiming to experience similar speeds will need a phone equipped with the M90 modem and support for Releases 17 and 18, which may limit options.
The positive aspect is that T-Mobile has integrated 5G Advanced across its nationwide network, promising improved internet speeds and connections for users throughout the United States.
