WhatsApp is introducing a new feature powered by Meta AI that aims to summarize messages in individual chats, groups, and channels. This feature is designed to help users catch up on conversations more efficiently without having to read through every single message.
The summarization option will activate after receiving a set number of new messages and ensures that the content remains private, protecting users’ information from WhatsApp, Meta, and third parties. The summary will then be sent securely back to the user’s device.
It’s important to note that this summarization feature will not be available in chats where Advanced Chat Privacy is enabled. This consideration respects users’ preferences regarding AI functionalities in their conversations.
The tool is currently in development and is expected to be included in a future update of WhatsApp. While WhatsApp facilitates connections with friends, colleagues, and various communities, the volume of messages can sometimes become overwhelming for users.
Keeping track of notifications and unread messages can be challenging, and rehashing these messages often feels like a daunting task. The upcoming summarization tool will provide a “TL;DR” option, helping users efficiently navigate their messages.
This new capability, which has been discovered in WhatsApp beta version 2.25.15.12 for Android, highlights that the feature appears after a certain number of new messages are received. Users will have the option to summarize their messages directly above unread notifications through a “Summarize with Meta AI” button.
When users select this option, a request is made and processed privately to ensure confidentiality. Details on how the summary will be displayed—whether in the chat interface, through a pop-up, or in a dedicated Meta AI chat—are yet to be confirmed.
However, it is confirmed that summarization will not function in conversations that utilize Advanced Chat Privacy, which restricts exporting chats and applying Meta AI in those specific discussions. The feature remains in development and is expected to roll out in a forthcoming WhatsApp update.
