The Gemini Android app is currently receiving a significant visual overhaul as Google implements various changes designed to enhance user experience. One of the most notable updates is the reversion of the “+” menu back to a list format, making navigation more familiar for users.
This adjustment aligns with a broader goal of rearranging prompt box chips to prioritize video generation features. In addition to these visual changes, the update introduces a new swipe gesture that allows for quicker access to Gemini Live.
This gesture makes it easier for users to launch the conversational AI assistant and is part of an effort to make the app more intuitive. These user interface modifications are now available in the stable version of the Google app (version 16.21), following recent improvements related to autocomplete prompts.
Previously, the “+” menu included vital controls for Camera, Gallery, Files, and Drive in a side-by-side pill layout. However, Google has reverted this design change back to the original list view, responding to user feedback highlighting the simplicity and ease of the list format.
This familiar layout is reflected in various screenshots shared by 9to5Google. Along with the menu update, the arrangement of the prompt box chips has been altered.
The emphasis has shifted from highlighting Deep Research to prioritizing video generation, likely due to the rising popularity of features like Veo 3. The update also introduces slight tweaks to the tool descriptions and incorporates a new half-circle logo for Canvas.
Most critically, the update also enhances access to Gemini Live. Users can now activate the conversational AI assistant by swiping from the right side of the screen, making this feature more readily available without navigating away from the app’s main interface.
Although using the power button remains the quickest method, this new gesture provides a more user-friendly option.
