Pixel phones come with exclusive features, one of which is the Google Phone’s Call Notes tool. This innovative tool uses artificial intelligence to transcribe phone calls in real time. Currently, during a live call, a voice alert notifies users that the conversation is being recorded and transcribed. However, an APK teardown suggests that users might soon have the option to change this voice alert to a simple chime.
Future updates may also introduce automatic Call Notes transcription, which could sidestep strict two-party consent laws regarding conversation recording in various regions. Pixel phone users are consistently offered the best features, with Google’s smartphones benefiting from the latest advancements in Android. The ongoing Quality, Performance, and Reliability (QPR) beta programs lead to useful Pixel Feature Drops, including the newly launched Material 3 Expressive redesign. Currently, the Pixel 9 series is the only lineup equipped with the convenient Call Notes feature for AI transcription.
Typically, when the automated transcription feature is activated, it provides an audio warning to let participants know their conversation is being captured. Despite this measure, the tool does not save audio recordings, only the transcribed text. According to insights from an APK teardown by AssembleDebug, it appears that the audio warning could potentially be replaced with simple chimes for a less intrusive notification. While there are no strict legal prohibitions against call recording in the U.S., many manufacturers and carriers choose not to enable it to avoid complexities surrounding consent laws.
The Call Notes feature on Pixel phones does not retain recordings; instead, it provides a one-time transcription. Recent updates have allowed for automatic deletion of transcriptions after a set duration and may introduce automatic transcription for all calls or specific contacts, significantly enhancing the overall functionality while adhering to legal stipulations.
