The HMD Skyline had the potential to be a significant player in the smartphone market as the first mainstream Android device with genuine Qi2 support. Unfortunately, it was met with criticism for being underpowered and overpriced, which prevented it from gaining traction.
The Galaxy S25 series also aimed to set new standards but instead highlighted the Wireless Power Consortium’s (WPC) revised, magnet-free Qi2 Ready standard. Recent developments signal a turn of events in the world of smartphones.
Insiders, particularly Kamila Wojciechowska from Android Authority, have revealed that Google is set to include complete Qi2 support in its smartphone lineup this year. This information came to light through the discovery of “credible marketing materials” regarding a new series of Qi2.2 accessories, termed the “Pixelsnap” lineup.
This suggests that the upcoming Pixel 10 series will be equipped with the necessary magnets and coils properly positioned for Qi2 functionality. The discussions surrounding Qi2 standards have been contentious.
Initially, the WPC affirmed that it would not dilute its standards. However, the introduction of the Qi2 Ready standard appeared to favor Samsung over consumers, which caused considerable frustration.
The situation worsened when it was reported that the Pixel 9 Pro XL struggled with Qi2 chargers due to an off-center charging coil, rendering it incompatible with the Qi2 Ready standard. Fortunately, the Pixel 10 family seems set to address these issues.
Wojciechowska’s access to marketing materials revealed a collection of Pixelsnap accessories, implying that full Qi2 support is forthcoming. Moreover, her findings suggest that not only will the Pixel 10 support Qi2 but also Qi2.2, which includes Magnetic Power Profile support.
This improvement positions Google’s technology to potentially surpass Apple’s MagSafe charging, ushering in a new era for wireless accessories in Android devices.
