The upcoming Pixel 10 series from Google is shaping up to be an intriguing mix of enhancements, setbacks, and areas of continuity. Scheduled for unveiling around August this year, the series has garnered significant attention in recent weeks. Notable expected features include upgraded display panels that promise higher peak brightness levels compared to their predecessors and the integration of the new Tensor G5 chip, manufactured by TSMC using a cutting-edge 3nm process. One of the most exciting additions to the base Pixel 10 model is the inclusion of a telephoto lens.
This feature marks a milestone as it is the first time a non-Pro Pixel model will come equipped with a telephoto lens, a detail which aligns with a previous leak that suggests this lens will allow for macro photography capabilities. However, this introduction comes with compromises, as reports indicate that other camera specifications may be significantly downgraded to make room for the new telephoto option. For context, the Pixel 9 boasts a robust 50-megapixel main sensor and a 48-megapixel ultrawide sensor. In contrast, the base Pixel 10 could see its primary camera reduced to a 48-megapixel sensor, potentially borrowed from the Pixel 9a, while the ultrawide could drop significantly to 12 megapixels.
This change is particularly perplexing, considering that the Pixel 8 originally had a 12-megapixel ultrawide and the Pixel 9 represented a meaningful increase in camera quality. On the connectivity front, the base Pixel 10 will reportedly forgo Wi-Fi 7 support and lack the vapor chamber cooling system that is exclusive to the Pro models. Nonetheless, there are some positive developments, including an upgraded 4,970mAh battery (up from 4,700mAh) and an increased maximum wired charging speed from 27W to 29W. With an expected reveal date around August 20th, more details about the upcoming devices are anticipated to emerge as the launch date approaches.
