YouTube Shorts Surpass TikTok with a Staggering 200 Times More Daily Views

Neal Mohan, the CEO of YouTube, made an impactful announcement this week regarding the platform’s rapidly growing popularity. YouTube Shorts is now experiencing an extraordinary 200 billion views each day, a dramatic increase from the 70 billion daily views reported just over a year ago in March 2024. This 186% growth highlights YouTube’s ambition to compete aggressively in the short-form video market. While TikTok has established itself as a major player in the vertical video space, it has not released similar metrics recently, perhaps indicating the tough competition it faces.

YouTube’s dominance in this area is becoming increasingly clear, as its numbers soar far above those of its competitors. Moreover, Mohan highlighted another impressive statistic: viewers are now watching over 1 billion hours of YouTube content on TVs daily. This significant number marks a notable change in consumer habits, a trend supported by Nielsen’s latest Gauge report. In May, YouTube captured a remarkable 12.5% share of all US TV viewership, surpassing both streaming services and traditional broadcasters for the fourth consecutive month.

Mohan also noted that for many of the top 100 YouTube channels, television is their most popular platform. This further illustrates YouTube’s growing influence in the living room, advancing beyond just mobile and desktop usage. Looking ahead, Mohan hinted at the upcoming release of Veo 3, a next-generation video generation model from DeepMind, which will enhance Shorts later this summer. This update promises to deliver sharper visuals and smoother animations, enriching the viewing experience for creators and their audiences alike.

In the larger context of the streaming industry, Nielsen reports that streaming has overtaken cable and broadcast combined, accounting for 44.8% of all TV usage in May. This transformation signifies a significant shift in how audiences engage with media, with YouTube at the forefront of redefining television in 2025.
