The Galaxy Z Fold series has long catered to users who appreciate the S Pen functionality, initially introduced with the Z Fold 3. This feature has allowed users to utilize the larger internal display for drawing and navigation, effectively enhancing their tablet-like experience. Although not the most utilized aspect of the Galaxy Z Fold phones, it has provided enthusiasts a satisfying way to engage with the S Pen. However, with the upcoming release of the Galaxy Z Fold 7, Samsung has brought disappointing news: the new device will not support S Pen functionality.
The company has cited the need for an additional layer on the display for S Pen compatibility, which adds thickness to the device. This announcement is particularly concerning, especially after recent changes to S Pen features in the Galaxy S25 Ultra, specifically the removal of Bluetooth capabilities. Samsung’s decision to exclude the S Pen from the Galaxy Z Fold 7 has left many shocked. My initial concerns about changes in the Galaxy S25 Ultra were overshadowed by the belief that the Z Fold series would remain a sanctuary for enthusiasts.
Unlike the more common Galaxy S25 Ultras purchased by casual consumers, the premium pricing of the Z Fold 7 makes it less appealing for everyday users. The removal of the S Pen functionality strips away a key justification for the device’s high cost, as many used it for creating sketches or annotating documents. As Samsung seems to prioritize thinness over features, this trend raises concerns about the future of the S Pen. The company frequently cites user surveys indicating low S Pen usage to rationalize these decisions, yet I find this hard to accept.
If a premium device like the Z Fold 7 cannot retain enthusiast features, one must wonder about the future of the S Pen across other devices.
