July’s Google Pixel Update Brings More Disappointments Than Improvements for Users

Google has begun rolling out an update for its Pixel phones, specifically the July 2025 security patches. This update is not in beta and applies to all users on the stable channel. While some may benefit from the fixes it offers, others might consider shopping for new devices after installation.

Today, Google added the July 2025 firmware upgrade to its factory images page, applicable to all Pixel devices, starting from the 6a model. This update comes with a build number of BP2A.250705.008 and includes crucial Android security updates. However, there’s notable bad news for certain Pixel 6a users.

The update introduces the Pixel 6a Battery Performance Program, which aims to address a potential battery overheating issue. This firmware version will reduce battery life for some 6a models, reminiscent of the “update of death” that affected the Pixel 4a earlier this year. Notably, only designated “Impacted Devices” that have undergone 400 charging cycles will experience reduced battery life.

Users can check their status through Google’s eligibility page. If affected, they can apply for a free battery replacement, payment, or a credit towards a new Pixel. Interestingly, the Pixel 6 has not been included in the update list.

Although the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro recently received an update to Android 16, it’s unclear if this omission signifies the end of software support or simply a delay in updates. Moreover, users have noted bugs like unresponsive back gestures and broken navigation features since the Android 16 rollout. Google initially acknowledged these issues and assured a forthcoming fix, but unfortunately, it didn’t make it into the July update, leaving users waiting for the August release.

For those unaffected by the current issues, there are some positive enhancements. The update includes fixes for smoother visual performance in Android Auto and improved Wi-Fi connectivity. The rollout is staggered and should reach all users over the next week.
