Samsung recently wrapped up its summer Unpacked event, showcasing a series of exciting new products. The South Korean tech giant unveiled its flagship devices, the Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7, alongside its inaugural Fan Edition foldable.
Additionally, they reintroduced the Galaxy Watch 8 series, featuring the Classic watch variant and a new Galaxy Watch Ultra model. Pre-orders for these innovative devices have kicked off, with general availability set for July 25th.
The new foldables will come equipped with Android 16-based One UI 8 right out of the box, introducing at least one new software feature for Samsung’s Flip line that has not been seen before. While Samsung’s DeX mode has been a staple in the Fold lineup, it had previously been absent from the clamshell models due to thermal management issues.
The Z Flip 7 changes this trend. Samsung’s announcement hinted at DeX support for the Z Flip 7, though specific details about wired and wireless modes were somewhat unclear.
Android analyst Mishaal Rahman confirmed that both modes will indeed work on the Z Flip 7, with wireless functionality limited to external displays that support Miracast. However, the new Z Flip 7 Fan Edition, being based on last year’s model, might still face similar thermal challenges, leading to the absence of DeX support in this particular foldable.
According to Samsung’s blog post, users will need to unfold their Z Flip 7 to utilize DeX mode, but this inclusion marks a significant advancement for productivity and multitasking potential in their new clamshell foldables. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 presents itself as a compact AI device, boasting a 4.1-inch edge-to-edge FlexWindow and a flagship-level 50MP camera, along with the largest battery ever in a Galaxy Z Flip model.
This combination promises enhanced performance and AI capabilities directly through the cover screen.
