Samsung is reportedly developing an alternative to Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, named Auto DeX. This new platform aims to allow users to mirror their smartphones and apps onto their vehicle’s infotainment system. Recent leaks from source @GalaxyTechie have presented a glimpse of Auto DeX’s interface, which appears to be user-friendly and adaptable. According to the leaker, Auto DeX is set to be compatible with over 8,500 vehicles across more than 120 manufacturers.
An intriguing feature of this system is its ability to work with unsupported vehicles, potentially through specific workarounds. Additionally, users may be able to run Auto DeX directly on their smartphones, offering a significant advantage over existing solutions like Android Auto, which discontinued its phone functionality in mid-2022. The leaked screenshot reveals that Auto DeX’s layout resembles that of its competitors, with a bottom taskbar for quick access to frequently used apps and a navigation bar designed for driver accessibility. Notably, a widget for music playback and a briefing feature is placed at the right, while the left side showcases shortcuts for essential functions such as calls, music, navigation, digital assistance, and app access.
Considering Samsung’s existing features, which often parallel Google’s offerings, the introduction of Auto DeX specifically for Galaxy devices appears plausible. If it shares a codebase with Android Auto, it would likely support all compatible applications. The close partnership between Google and Samsung may have facilitated exclusive access to certain customization features. This is the first indication of Samsung’s plans to compete with Android Auto and CarPlay, and while many details remain unknown, there is speculation that Auto DeX may be unveiled soon, possibly during the launch of the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7.
