Google Could Enhance Android Screen Savers, Making Them More Valuable to Users

Google has introduced a significant update to Android’s early-access program, moving from the developer preview builds to a new Canary channel. The initial Android Canary build is already available and includes several subtle yet impactful changes, particularly enhancing the screen saver feature for better compatibility with wireless charging. Mishaal Rahman, an expert on Android, has reported that the first Canary build introduces a “While upright and charging” option found in Settings under Display & touch > Screen saver.

Additionally, a “Restrict to wireless charging” toggle has been included, allowing the screen saver to activate only when the device is being charged wirelessly. This new upright feature enables the screen saver to display while the phone is positioned upright on a wireless charger. These adjustments underscore a consideration for wireless charging.

It’s impractical for the screen saver to activate when the device is flat on a desk during USB-C charging, especially when the screen is not visible. Earlier Android 16 builds only triggered the screen saver when the phone was charging, but the new Canary build introduces more granular controls for enhanced flexibility. Alongside these features, Google has implemented a low light mode for screen savers in the first Canary build of Android 16.

In dimly lit rooms, users can choose for the display to either turn off or show a low light clock. The current Android 16 requires users to manually switch to the Clock screen saver while charging, which can be cumbersome in various lighting conditions. The upcoming Low Light mode will automatically adapt the screen saver according to ambient light levels.

While Apple has long offered extensive customization options with its iPhone StandBy mode, Google appears to be making strides in screen saver customization for Android. These changes dovetail nicely with the anticipated Pixel 10 and its related PixelSnap charging accessories, reflecting a commitment to improving the user experience with wireless charging.
