Google Lens Introduces Subtle UI Refresh, Removes Dedicated Homework Feature

Google has recently refocused its Lens tool to clarify its purpose alongside the existing Google Search (CtS). The company has repositioned Lens as an application dedicated to visual queries related to real-world objects and images stored in users’ galleries, while CtS manages on-screen searches. Recently, Google appears to be subtly changing the role of Lens through a minor update in its user interface (UI).

The flagship AI tool, Gemini, which already incorporates advanced homework-solving capabilities, is being emphasized as the primary assistant for academic help. As part of this shift, Google has removed the dedicated homework feature from Google Lens. The new UI changes were first noted by Android Authority on the Galaxy Z Fold 7.

In the updated camera view, the previous three separate buttons have been consolidated into two main options: Search and Translate, now presented in a new pill-shaped design. This change allows the camera view to extend fully to the bottom of the screen, enhancing user experience. However, this redesigned UI has not yet reached all devices.

Testing on a Pixel 8 and a Galaxy S23 FE showed that they still operate with the old layout. This indicates that the rollout is either gradual or in a limited testing phase, as evidenced by Android Authority’s findings on the newer Galaxy Z Fold 7. As Google Lens undergoes these adjustments, users may want to consider if they still prefer using it or if the features offered by CtS and Gemini better suit their needs.
