Google Pixel 10 Blurs Distinction Between Base and Pro Models: A Closer Look

Base edition smartphones often present a more subdued look compared to their Pro edition counterparts, mostly due to having fewer camera lenses. A good example of this is the Pixel 9 series. It’s easy to differentiate between a standard Pixel 9 and a Pixel 9 Pro or Pro XL just by examining the camera bar on the back. However, this distinction may blur with the upcoming Pixel 10 series.

The upcoming Pixel 10 is set to be the first base model to include a rear telephoto lens, and as more details emerge, we have a clearer picture of how this upgrade will influence the phone’s design. New renders of the base Pixel 10, reported by Android Headlines, reveal a design strikingly similar to that of the Pixel 9 Pro. The base Pixel 10 is expected to be available in multiple color options: Obsidian, Indigo, Frost, and Limoncello. With three rear cameras, it closely resembles the Pixel 9 Pro, with the exception of the missing temperature sensor.

These colors have been previously hinted at by leaker @MysteryLupin. While the layout for the flash, power, and volume buttons remains unchanged—along with the centrally located ‘G’ logo—the Pixel 10 is anticipated to keep the curved edges of its predecessor. However, to accommodate the new telephoto lens, Google appears to be making some compromises. The primary rear camera is likely to be downgraded to a 48-megapixel sensor from the previous 50-megapixel, while the ultrawide sensor may drop from 48-megapixels to 12-megapixels.

On the upside, a larger 4,970mAh battery is expected, along with increased wired charging speeds. Although the hardware may not significantly differ from its predecessor, Google aims to excel with the software. The Pixel 10 will ship with Android 16 preinstalled and promises 7 years of major OS upgrade support. The official reveal is scheduled for August 20, where it will be presented alongside various models, including the Pixel 10 Pro and the Pixel Watch 4.
