Samsung Could Implement Major Changes to Its Flagship Software Updates

Recent rumors suggest that Samsung may be planning to revolutionize its software update approach, particularly regarding its foldable devices. According to a well-known leaker, IceUniverse, the Galaxy Z Fold series will receive One UI updates in sync with Google’s Android releases.

This means that when Android 16 is launched, One UI 8 will be based on it. In contrast, the flagship S-series, such as the S25 Ultra, will receive updates later, specifically with a point-5 version — for instance, One UI 9.5 instead of One UI 9.

While it hasn’t been explicitly stated that S-series updates will be delayed, the nature of point-5 updates suggests they will arrive after the initial versions. IceUniverse also indicated that these updates for the S-series would be “more substantial,” comprising improved UI and UX designs, new AI functionalities, and various enhancements.

This creates an interesting dynamic: Z Fold and Z Flip models may get timely software upgrades, while the S-series could see richer, more feature-laden updates, albeit later. This shift raises questions about Samsung’s reasoning.

Traditionally, rapid software updates have been a key advantage for flagship owners, and altering this could potentially undermine that perception. Notably, Samsung’s history of slow updates calls into question whether this change will significantly impact users.

Another consideration is how the new features will be rolled out. If the S-range receives new features first, will foldable phones like the Z Flip and Z Fold have to wait until a subsequent One UI version for the same upgrades, or will they receive them in later phases of the same version?

Given the premium nature of the Z Fold and Z Flip, it seems unlikely that Samsung would intentionally deprive these devices of valuable features. As for the latest offering, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7, it boasts impressive specs with up to 16GB RAM, multiple storage options, and a more streamlined design.

With such advancements, it remains a compelling choice in the foldable market, awaiting formal announcements on its software strategy and functionality.
