T-Mobile and Starlink Clear Last Hurdle for Satellite Texting on Older Mobile Devices

Not all satellite cell phone connectivity services are the same. Some require specific modem components that are typically found in flagship models like the Pixel 9 and Galaxy S25 series.

However, T-Mobile and Starlink have ventured into a new direction with their Direct To Cell (DTC) initiative. This involves transceivers installed in Starlink satellites communicating on the 1900MHz frequency, known as the n2 and n25 bands.

Traditionally, each phone model had to receive explicit FCC approval to transmit and receive data from space. In a significant move, T-Mobile and Starlink sought a waiver from this requirement for their satellite texting solution, which is accessible to everyone in the U.S., regardless of carrier.

In April, the FCC approved this waiver, allowing nearly all U.S. devices to utilize this potentially life-saving service. Finding dead zones can often be easy, particularly outside major cities.

Local geography can obstruct reception just a few miles from populated areas, and during emergencies, finding a signal can be challenging. T-Mobile and Starlink’s DTC texting aims to address this issue.

The Starlink satellites in low Earth orbit are not only equipped for global broadband but also feature transmitters that essentially act as miniature cell towers operating in the 1900MHz range, which supports nearly every phone in the country. However, launching this service came with challenges, especially for older phone models that required additional authorization to connect with satellites.

Given that many of these phones would never receive an updated authorization, many users were at risk of being left without access. The FCC ultimately agreed that existing hardware restrictions shouldn’t inhibit owners from accessing this crucial feature.

Now, users with U.S.-released devices can enjoy T-Mobile’s satellite texting for a modest fee of $15 per month, with an introductory discount of $5. This offer is especially appealing for those who frequently venture into the wilderness.
