Google is currently updating its applications and the Android operating system with the new Material 3 Expressive design language. This gradual rollout began earlier in the year, with updates coming in stages. For example, in June, Google Drive introduced a new video player that reflects this fresh design approach.
Recently, an APK teardown by Android Authority revealed potential visual updates in other areas of the Google Drive app. The changes brought about by the Material 3 Expressive design are not overly dramatic. They mainly focus on refining existing layouts and touch targets to enhance user experience and draw attention to essential elements of the interface.
The anticipated refresh for Google Drive aligns with this idea. Screenshots released by Android Authority indicate that Drive will soon feature an improved overflow menu, which you can access by tapping the three-dot icon in any document. The redesigned menu will incorporate colorful, pill-shaped buttons.
For folders, the options will include “Share,” “Add to starred,” and “Summarize this folder.” However, instead of the “Summarize this folder” option for individual files, users will find a “Make available offline” feature. Notably, the previous version’s “Manage access” button will be removed from sight, with its functionality now incorporated within the share menu.
Additionally, there will be a more prominent “Summarize this file” button in the PDF viewer of Google Drive. According to AssembleDebug, an Android enthusiast, these improvements have been activated in version 2.25.260.0.all.alldpi of the Google Drive app, although they have yet to appear in any public release. Considering Google’s trend of updating apps with Material 3 Expressive elements, users can anticipate these changes being implemented in their Drive app soon.
