In late 2024, rumors circulated about Google’s intentions to merge ChromeOS with Android. Reports emerged indicating that the company was embarking on a multi-year project to transition ChromeOS into Android. Although this initiative was not officially announced at that time, recent developments have confirmed the plan.
Sameer Samat, President of the Android Ecosystem at Google, shared insights with TechRadar, shedding light on the merger. During an interview, Samat was questioned about his preference for using Apple devices, which prompted him to reveal the company’s plans. He stated, “We’re going to be combining ChromeOS and Android into a single platform,” expressing genuine interest in user experiences with laptops and productivity.
This affirmation marks a significant step forward in the merger. While details remain sparse, it is evident that Google is focused on enhancing the cross-device experience within the integrated ChromeOS-Android platform. Earlier in 2024, the company began merging aspects of the Android kernel into ChromeOS to facilitate faster AI integration.
This latest announcement suggests a more comprehensive merger is on the horizon. As a result of this unified operating system, we may see Chromebooks that offer improved compatibility with Android apps and advanced integration with Android smartphones. There are even hints of Google developing a new Pixel Laptop, internally dubbed “Snowy,” which could feature a premium design.
Moreover, Google has progressively added desktop-like functionalities to Android. The upcoming Quarterly Platform Release of Android 16 is set to enhance this further, introducing a desktop mode for multitasking on external screens. This feature will also be available on tablets, enhancing their usability as desktop alternatives.
However, we may still be a few years away from the complete integration of ChromeOS and Android, so it’s advisable to temper expectations regarding any announcements at the anticipated Pixel 10 launch event in mid-August.
