Android 16 Beta 3 has officially rolled out, marking the final stage of app-facing changes in Google’s latest smartphone software. This update establishes a stable platform for developers to finalize their applications without worrying about significant changes from future beta updates. As with previous Android beta releases, this version introduces various behind-the-scenes modifications, including a more comprehensive code for a redesigned Quick Settings panel.
Mishaal Rahman from Android Authority reports that he managed to activate a new iteration of the Quick Settings panel using the third beta. This fresh design has been hinted at in earlier updates, with reports from January discussing modifications to how certain quick settings tiles expand. By February, additional insights emerged, showcasing a potential new user interface for tile removal.
This updated panel aims to divide notifications and quick settings into distinct sections, similar to the layouts found on iOS and Samsung’s One UI 7. Users will be able to switch between these views by tapping buttons located in the upper corners of the screen or swiping on designated areas. However, it’s uncertain whether the swipe gestures will remain in the final version.
Despite Rahman successfully showcasing this new layout on his device, the revised design is not an official feature of the Beta 3 release. Users will not experience this layout by simply updating their devices. While there is speculation that this feature might appear in the stable Android 16 release scheduled for June, its current unfinished state suggests that it may be postponed.
The new design could possibly emerge in the anticipated second major update later in Q4, when more user-facing features are expected to be introduced.
