Samsung’s inaugural tri-fold hints at preserving the Galaxy Z identity moving forward.

Samsung has confirmed its plans to launch a tri-folding phone later this year, although it did not unveil the device alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7. Various leaks have hinted at the device’s form factor, with speculation suggesting that it may be marketed as the Galaxy G Fold. However, a recent trademark registration points towards the possibility of Samsung branding it under the Galaxy Z series. The company typically reserves the Galaxy S name for its flagship devices, while the Galaxy Z branding is used for its foldable smartphones.

Since the new device falls into the foldable category, it seems logical for Samsung to introduce it as part of the Galaxy Z lineup. Reports indicate that Samsung has registered the “Galaxy Z Trifold” trademark in South Korea, indicating a clear link to the tri-fold feature. Despite this trademark, it is still uncertain if Samsung will maintain the “Z Trifold” name worldwide or choose a different name for markets like China. The Galaxy Z Trifold is expected to have a limited release, similar to the Galaxy Z Fold SE from last year.

Samsung is likely to produce a restricted number of units, potentially leading to high pricing. This could affect the extent of marketing efforts for the device. As seen with the original Galaxy Fold, Samsung might also decide to tweak the branding further when it aims to introduce the tri-fold device to a broader audience. According to reports, internal development of the device, codenamed Q7M, is progressing well, keeping it on track for a late 2023 release.

The Galaxy Z Trifold is anticipated to feature a titanium chassis with a Snapdragon chipset, alongside upgraded, lighter titanium hinges designed to optimize its footprint while enhancing rigidity. The device is also expected to share many components with Samsung’s latest book-style foldable, including its camera setup.
