Spin Master, the company known for creating the Rubik’s Cube, has announced an exciting collaboration with Cubios Inc. to launch a new gaming device named the Rubik’s WOWCube. This innovative product is essentially a Rubik’s Cube equipped to play popular mobile games, including titles like Cut the Rope. The WOWCube is anticipated to hit the market before the year ends, functioning as an open platform that will support a built-in SDK and developer tools, enabling users to create their own applications for the device.
So, what exactly is the Rubik’s WOWCube? Unlike the traditional 3×3 model, this new device features a 2×2 design and consists of several small screens that can be rotated. Each screen can independently run mobile apps, such as calendars, or contribute to a single game experience.
Spin Master has already announced unique versions of beloved games like Space Invaders, along with popular mobile titles such as 2048. Additionally, the WOWCube will allow developers to create original games, highlighting its potential as a versatile gaming platform. Cubios has some prior experience with this concept, having previously released a similar WOWCube.
Now, with Spin Master’s support, Cubios CEO Max Filin expressed his enthusiasm for this latest iteration in a press release. Filin remarked that the original WOWCube provided valuable insights into creating an engaging gaming experience and how to design a platform conducive to developer creativity. He emphasized that this new version incorporates lessons learned over the past two years and is officially integrated into the iconic Rubik’s family.
At this point, details regarding the specific release date and pricing are still under wraps. However, pre-orders are expected to open soon, and the product is slated for launch in late 2025. Personally, I’m eager to see whether the WOWCube proves to be a groundbreaking gaming platform or merely an enhanced Android device.
