Chrome for Android is set to receive an essential security enhancement in the near future.

Chrome on Android ranks among the most popular browsers globally, which explains Google’s ongoing commitment to enhancing it with new features and updates. However, one significant gap in the app has been the absence of biometric protection for user passwords.

Fortunately, it appears that this issue is finally being addressed, as Google is set to introduce additional security measures for password management on Chrome. Historically, Chrome has been a surprising oversight in this regard.

While Google Password Manager provides biometric protection for passwords in numerous apps, it had not extended this security feature to Chrome. This omission meant that anyone who gained access to your phone could easily log into any saved accounts on the browser if your password details were stored in the manager.

Recent observations by Telegram user Micha, reported by Android Authority, indicate changes on the horizon. The previous option labeled “Authenticate with biometrics before filling passwords” within Google Password Manager’s security settings has disappeared.

It has been replaced with a new setting called “Verify it’s you to autofill passwords.” Although the phrasing appears similar, the new option includes an important addition: “For added protection, always use your fingerprint, face, or other screen lock when you sign in using autofill (coming soon to Chrome).”

This note about the upcoming feature is crucial, as it confirms Google acknowledges the lack of robust password protection in Chrome and is actively working on a solution. While the exact timeline for when this feature will be implemented remains unclear, the “Coming soon” note suggests that it may be introduced in the near future.

Users can look forward to enhanced security in managing their passwords on Chrome, which is a welcome development.
