Samsung faced challenges with the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 in 2024, as sales fell below expectations. The lack of innovative features left many potential buyers uninterested, especially considering the hefty price tag approaching $2,000.
Customers tend to seek excitement and new technology before committing to such a significant purchase. Anticipating stronger sales for the next generation, Samsung took a more cautious approach to gauge consumer interest.
In 2025, Samsung responded with the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7, presenting more stylish designs alongside tangible improvements. This strategy paid off; the Galaxy Z Fold 7 saw a remarkable increase in pre-orders, surpassing the previous generation by over 50%.
Overall, the new foldables achieved a 25% year-over-year boost in pre-orders, driven partly by carrier store experiences that allowed customers to appreciate the enhancements firsthand. While carrier finance contracts made the price easier to handle, Samsung’s efforts to entice buyers created a compelling purchase decision.
Samsung also diverged from generic sales metrics by highlighting the popularity of color variants. For instance, half of the Galaxy Z Fold 7 pre-orders were for the striking Blue Shadow color, while Coral Red made up 25% of the Galaxy Z Flip 7’s pre-orders.
Design and aesthetics are crucial, particularly for the more accessible Galaxy Z Flip 7, which has attracted buyers with its appealing look, echoing the success of the Motorola Razr despite its limitations. The Galaxy Z Fold 7, an upgrade from previous models, offers a thinner, lighter design and an expanded cover display.
While the $2,000 price remains a barrier for casual users, finance options from carriers provide flexibility. The device’s software now better utilizes its large screen, making tasks like photo editing simpler and enhancing multitasking.
With these improvements, it’s clear why Samsung is seeing an increase in sales for the Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip this year.
