OpenAI is in the process of developing a new feature called “Connectors” for ChatGPT Team subscribers. This ambitious feature aims to provide deeper integration with Google Drive and Slack, moving beyond simple file uploads to facilitate more comprehensive interactions. By enabling ChatGPT to access and analyze internal business data while respecting existing permissions, the integration will empower administrators to maintain control over synchronized content. Although the specific release timeline for Connectors is still uncertain, the initial rollout is expected to focus exclusively on business users, with future support planned for additional platforms.
Currently, ChatGPT can connect with storage services like Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive, allowing users to upload files for analysis. However, the new Connectors feature could enhance this capability significantly. According to a document obtained by TechCrunch, Beta testing for Connectors will first target ChatGPT Team subscribers, specifically incorporating Google Drive and Slack. Unlike the existing file import function, the new integration promises full access to these applications, enabling users to issue commands such as “summarize the document that (person’s name) sent me yesterday,” or “what did my colleagues discuss in Slack today?”
OpenAI reportedly has plans to extend Connectors to other platforms, including Microsoft SharePoint and Box. This development highlights a competitive landscape, particularly with rivals like Gemini leading the charge in providing similar services. OpenAI has emphasized a business-first approach with this tool, allowing employees to leverage internal information akin to web searches while assuring users that integration permissions will be meticulously upheld and regularly updated. Security remains a priority, with account-level permissions ensuring that employees can only access documents and chats they are authorized to view.
Admins will also have control over which Slack channels and Google Drive files are synchronized. While the exact timeline for the official announcement of Connectors remains unclear, it appears that regular ChatGPT users may need to wait some time before accessing these functionalities.
