Gemini Now Capable of Answering Your Questions About Google Maps

Google has introduced an exciting new feature within its Gemini platform, enhancing the experience of using Google Maps. This feature enables users to ask contextual questions about specific locations, making it easier to find information about businesses and restaurants. For example, users can inquire, “Does this store carry milk?”

with the help of a new feature called the “Ask about place” chip. To access this feature, users can open Gemini from within Google Maps and tap on a location. An input bubble will appear at the bottom of the screen, displaying the “Ask about place” chip.

By selecting it, a Maps URL is sent to Gemini, allowing it to understand which location you’re referring to. Subsequently, Gemini can provide answers to various questions, such as directions, nearby attractions, and details about restaurant menus. In testing this integration, it appears to function most effectively with specific businesses and points of interest.

However, broader inquiries about neighborhoods or entire cities may not yield the desired results. Occasionally, Gemini may revert to using standard Google Search for more complex questions. Despite this, users have reported positive experiences, with Gemini successfully identifying menu items from local restaurants.

It’s important to note that the “Ask about place” feature is still in its early rollout phase and might not be accessible for all users. Some may encounter issues such as the feature not appearing or Gemini failing to load the Maps context. Additionally, while it’s unclear if a subscription to Gemini Advanced is necessary for full functionality, initial tests suggest that it may not be required.

To use this feature, users should ensure they have the specified updated versions of the Google app, Gemini app, and Google Maps. As development continues, this integration shows significant promise to enhance user experience.
