Google Discontinues Nest Protect: The Smart Smoke Detector’s Journey Ends

Google has officially stopped the production of the second-generation Nest Protect connected smoke detector. Despite the discontinuation, existing Nest Protect units will continue to receive software and security updates.

Users can be assured that their devices will function normally until their expiration dates. The first-generation Nest Protect was launched in 2013, followed by the second generation in 2015.

These detectors have a lifespan of 10 years from the date of manufacture, which means some second-generation units are nearing their expiration. However, many devices manufactured after 2015 may still have several years of usability left.

Recently, Nest Protect units finally integrated with the Google Home app, enhancing their functionality within the smart home ecosystem. There have been circulating reports on social media indicating that availability of the Nest Protect has been diminishing, with some customers receiving units that were manufactured years ago.

This suggests that production may have been gradually winding down before the official announcement. In addition, reports have surfaced that the manufacturing of the Nest x Yale smart door lock has also ceased.

Currently, users of the Nest Protect can rest easy knowing their devices will continue to work as intended for the foreseeable future, up until the 10-year mark from their individual manufacturing dates. For those seeking a replacement that operates within the Google Home ecosystem, Google recommends the SC5 Smart Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarm by First Alert.

This alternative is positioned as a suitable option for maintaining safety within smart home settings.
