Bigme is transforming its HiBreak smartphone into an e-reader, taking a page from Boox’s Palma model by removing the SIM card slot. The new HiBreak e-reader will feature specifications similar to the smartphone version, maintaining a resolution of 275 PPI. This move appears to be a strategic effort by Bigme to provide a more affordable e-reader option on platforms like Amazon, aimed at undercutting competition from Boox. The trend of phone-sized e-readers gained traction with the Boox Palma, which unfortunately faced criticism for not functioning as a phone.
While Hisense produces E Ink phones, they are not available in the U.S., opening a gap in the market for Bigme’s HiBreak. This smartphone variant, equipped with 4G capabilities, works in the U.S. and has led to consumer interest for a 5G version, known as the HiBreak Pro. However, with Boox performing well with its Palma and Palma 2 models, Bigme needed a competitive offering. According to recent coverage from Good E-Reader, the HiBreak will soon be available as a dedicated e-reader without a SIM slot.
Although details are sparse, a hands-on video indicates that the device is indeed in development. It will share the same internal components as the HiBreak smartphone, minus the SIM support. In terms of specifications, the upcoming HiBreak will be powered by a Mediatek Helio P35 MT6765 processor, with 128 GB of storage and 6 GB of RAM. The device will retain its 5.84-inch e-paper display, ensuring it remains compact and portable with a 3300 mAh battery.
Running on Android 11, Bigme is expected to keep this operating system version. As Bigme and Boox both actively sell on Amazon, the HiBreak’s competitive pricing—enhanced by the removal of SIM support—promises to challenge the popularity of the Palma 2. With the stage set for competition, it remains to be seen how Bigme’s strategy will unfold.
