Fitbit’s Google Assistant feature set to cease operations in the upcoming weeks.

Google is set to discontinue Assistant services on Fitbit devices in the coming weeks. Users can expect alerts on their gadgets about this impending shutdown.

The decision is likely part of Google’s strategy to boost sales of its Pixel Watch by removing Assistant from another brand it owns, Fitbit. While not everyone may prefer smartwatches, models running Google’s Wear OS offer a range of features that blend smartphone apps, fitness tracking, and media controls.

Google has launched its Pixel Watches competing in this space, targeting users interested in its brand. The removal of Assistant from Fitbit seems to be a strategic move to encourage customers to choose the Pixel Watch over other options.

Google Assistant was made available on the Fitbit Sense and Versa series five years ago. However, its functionality has dwindled, particularly as Google shifted its focus to the newer Gemini AI assistant, despite the latter’s current limitations.

This transition has impacted various wearables and even Android Auto. Users on platforms like Reddit are starting to report notifications about the discontinuation of Assistant on their Fitbit devices.

The shutdown of Assistant was anticipated following Fitbit’s announcement in 2024 regarding the discontinuation of the service. Alerts are now rolling out broadly, with individuals seeing notifications on devices like the Fitbit Sense and Versa 3.

As of now, it remains unclear whether any Fitbit models will retain Assistant after the shutdown, which is expected to conclude in the coming weeks. For users who rely on voice assistants, Fitbit suggests considering Alexa on their devices.

This shift appears to be linked to Google’s ownership of the Fitbit brand, as the discontinuation of Assistant could inadvertently push customers toward non-Google competitors like Garmin. There is currently no indication if Gemini will eventually serve as a replacement for the Assistant on Fitbit devices.
